President Nicușor Dan declared on Monday that the modification of the value-added tax (VAT) is not under discussion, as it is an integral part of the budget for the year 2026. He emphasized that there will be no return to the standard VAT rate of 19%. Starting from August 1, 2025, the general VAT rate has increased from 19% to 21%, according to the first package of fiscal measures adopted by the Bolojan Government.

Nicușor Dan has repeatedly expressed his opposition to this increase, reminding of his commitment during the electoral campaign not to allow such a rise. However, a reduced VAT rate of 11% will be maintained for certain products and services, including books, medicines, food, housing deliveries, and other essential goods, as part of the social policy.
