Context: Romania and Bulgaria coordinate their response to drone attacks and discuss European support for security in the Black Sea
Before the initiative concerning a regional security center, President Nicușor Dan announced discussions with the Bulgarian prime minister about attacks on vessels in the Black Sea and the measures necessary for the safety of maritime navigation. In parallel, Romania and Bulgaria sought to promote stronger measures to counter drones at the level of the European Union and NATO, amid incidents that affected commercial vessels.
The discussions took place after attacks were reported off the Bulgarian coast, including a commercial vessel being struck by an aerial drone, followed by official reactions and condemnations from European institutions. At the same time, the European Commission made satellite imagery available to assess the situation, while the European Maritime Safety Agency supported the Romanian and Bulgarian authorities in their efforts to maintain maritime security.
In this context, Romania and Bulgaria were also involved in regional security projects, including plans to improve maritime monitoring and protect critical infrastructure, coordinated at the level of the two states. In addition, there were discussions about strengthening military cooperation and possible joint structures, while Romania also supported the idea of a European Union security hub in the Black Sea.
