On January 14, 2026, the President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, signed the decrees acknowledging the resignation of Daniel-Ovidiu David from the position of Minister of Education and Research, and designating Ilie-Gavril Bolojan, Prime Minister, as interim minister. David's resignation occurred before the Christmas holidays, motivated by dissatisfaction related to the budget and the necessity to relinquish funds for universities.

Daniel David had been minister since December 23, 2024, and comes from the academic environment, having a career as a psychology professor and former rector of Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca. Although several names were circulated for his replacement, Bolojan's assumption of the interim position suggests difficulties in negotiations for a new minister. The names discussed include Marilen Pintea, Luciana Antoci, and Monica Anisie.
