The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has appointed a new consul general in Odesa, Doru Liciu. The consulate's activity has resumed in a limited capacity.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania has announced the appointment of Doru Liciu as the new consul general of Romania in Odesa, Ukraine, through the Government Decision adopted on April 29, 2026. This appointment comes after a period during which the consular office was managed temporarily, and its activity was suspended in February 2022 due to the war. Doru Liciu has extensive experience within the MFA, having held previous positions, including consul in Toronto and chargé d'affaires at the Romanian Embassy in Turkey. The consulate in Odesa resumed its activity in the autumn of 2025, but in a limited regime, with a presence of 14 days per month. The MFA aims to gradually return to normal operations, considering the needs of the Romanian community in the region, which numbers over 120,000 people. Additionally, cultural activities and assistance projects have been supported during this period. The strategic importance of the Odesa region, with Ukraine's largest port, underscores the need for effective consular representation. Consular activities have continued through mobile consulates, with seven trips made so far.
