NBR Governor Mugur Isărescu emphasized that Romania cannot adopt the euro at present because of inadequate policy decisions over the past decade. He underlined the importance of stabilizing the public deficit and meeting certain fiscal targets, as failure to do so would seriously affect the single currency's adoption horizon. Isărescu noted that technically, euro adoption would only be possible if the leu's fluctuations are controlled, but the necessary fiscal correction could take 5-7 years.
