A 43-year-old man from Strehaia was the victim of a scam on January 21, 2026, in Hațeg, Hunedoara County. He met with two strangers to buy gold coins, offering the sum of 90,000 euros. After handing over the money, the two sealed the amount in an envelope, promising to return with the coins. The victim later discovered that the envelope contained eight bundles of paper, with only 16 authentic banknotes.

The investigation was taken over by the Hațeg Criminal Investigation Unit, and on March 10, 2026, searches were carried out in Oradea and Maramureș. The two suspects, a 54-year-old man from Oradea and a 68-year-old man from Bucharest, were identified, and the man from Oradea was detained for 24 hours in connection with another similar criminal case. The Iași Court ordered his preventive arrest for 30 days.
