Mugur Isărescu, the governor of the BNR, warned that Romania risks losing recent progress regarding credibility and accessibility in external markets if the budget deficit is not corrected. In a statement, Isărescu recalled the difficulties encountered at the beginning of his term as Prime Minister of Romania (1999-2000), when he had to quickly find sources of funding, in a context where no one wanted to lend to Romania, despite the fact that the country had paid off its external debt during Ceaușescu's time.

He emphasized the importance of resuming relations with the International Monetary Fund, mentioning that Romania was the only communist state admitted to the organization. In 2025, Romania's budget deficit reached 7.7%, raising questions about the economic sustainability of the country.
