National Bank of Romania Governor Mugur Isărescu advocated long-term thinking, credible institutions and international cooperation in a speech delivered at the “No Limits to Hope: Sense-making for alternative futures” conference, organized by the Romanian Association for the Club of Rome.
Isărescu warned that economic uncertainty, technological change and pressure on the environment are mutually reinforcing, making it more difficult to manage society’s problems. He stressed that the erosion of trust makes it harder to reach consensus on the necessary measures.
The governor’s first stated priority was a long-term perspective. Decisions made today, he explained, influence the options and constraints of future generations. The second concerns institutions, which need clear mandates, professional competence and the ability to learn from experience. Their credibility is built through consistent decisions, accountability and honest communication of possibilities and limitations.
The third priority is cooperation, since many of the forces shaping societies extend beyond national borders. Dialogue between countries and generations can help identify risks at an earlier stage.
The Club of Rome, founded in 1968, is known for the report “The Limits to Growth,” published in 1972. The Romanian Association for the Club of Rome, affiliated with the international network, was established in 1993 and promotes these issues in Romania’s public debate.
