A sailor died as a result of the explosion of the oil tanker attacked in the Black Sea

One of the three injured sailors in the explosion that occurred aboard the oil tanker Gas Lisbon, in the Black Sea, died in the hospital from his injuries. The other two crew members remain hospitalized and are receiving medical care for burns and other traumas.

The incident took place off the coast of the Black Sea, near the Romanian shoreline, and the entire crew was evacuated by the ships of the Romanian Agency for Human Life Saving at Sea (ARSVOM).

The explosion occurred on the night of July 20 to 21 aboard the Gas Lisbon, a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier, which was in transit from Egypt to the Ukrainian port of Reni. Initial reports indicated an explosion followed by a fire, and later hypotheses emerged suggesting that the ship may have been hit in the context of the conflict in the region.

According to the President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, "the causes" of this incident are "most likely part of the illegal aggression war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine," after emphasizing that the oil tanker was hit outside Romanian territorial waters.

The circumstances of the incident are still under investigation.
