The Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes (IICMER) expressed concern regarding the statements of the Minister of Defense, Radu Miruță, who avoided answering clearly whether Nicolae Ceaușescu was a patriot. IICMER emphasized that such statements deny historical truth and deepen the wounds of the communist past, in a context where communist nostalgia is on the rise in Romania.
The Institute has requested public apologies from the minister, on behalf of the victims of the communist regime, emphasizing that his statements risk relativizing the horrors of the dictatorship. Miruță acknowledged that he did not capitalize on Romania's potential, but he avoided providing a direct answer to the question about Ceaușescu's patriotism, which generated criticism from journalists and public opinion.
