Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu has announced a plan to increase fines for those who feed bears, in reaction to recent attacks, including the fatal incident on the Transfăgărășan. She points out that feeding bears makes them lose their fear of humans, increasing the risk of attacks. The draft will include clear penalties for feeding wild animals, which are not specified in current legislation. Romania has between 10,000 and 12,000 bears, far more than the optimal number, and the authorities will work with mayors to manage risk situations.
