Gabriela Firea, PSD MEP, sent an open letter to European Commissioners Michael McGrath and Hajda Lahbib, requesting stricter measures for the prevention and combat of violence against women. Firea proposes the extension of victim protection, the criminalization of femicide, and harsher penalties for perpetrators, emphasizing that the responsibility to combat violence is shared.

In the context of 52 women being killed in Romania due to domestic violence, Firea has collaborated with experts to develop legislative proposals that strengthen European legislation. Among her requests are a common legal framework for prevention and sanctioning, psychological support for victims, and the collection of harmonized data on violence. Firea recently highlighted a recent case of femicide in Romania as an example of the need for urgent and effective measures.
