“Guilfoyle spoke about Romania in these terms.” Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle’s statement about the Bolojan Government, confirmed in the Financial Times

Financial Times confirms that the U.S. ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, made a controversial statement in Athens about the possibility of overthrowing certain governments, apparently referring to Romania.

The British publication reported on September 29 that Kimberly Guilfoyle, a former fiancée of Donald Trump Jr. who was appointed U.S. ambassador to Greece last year, was quoted by the Wall Street Journal as alluding to the imminent collapse of the Bolojan government, stating: “We can do this to any country we want. We can do this here.”

The government led by Ilie Bolojan was subsequently dismissed on May 5, after the Social Democrats withdrew from the coalition and voted alongside AUR.

“Guilfoyle spoke about Romania in these terms on March 18, during an official dinner at the U.S. embassy in Athens attended by more than a dozen people – including politicians, embassy staff members and military personnel – a person familiar with the situation told the British publication Financial Times.

FT writes that, after the dinner in Athens, Guilfoyle traveled to Bucharest, where she met with members of the PSD, including Sorin Grindeanu and the then energy minister, Bogdan Ivan. There, the ambassador promoted the Vertical Gas Corridor and insisted that Romania purchase significant quantities of liquefied natural gas from the U.S.

The PSD denied allegations of complicity with Washington, while designated prime minister Siegfried Mureșan said the meeting appeared conspiratorial and should be investigated. The U.S. ambassador in Bucharest stated that Washington has full confidence in Romanian democracy.

In Athens, the government denied the existence of any threat and stressed that relations with the United States remain strong.
