Four employees of the Giurgiu Penitentiary have been suspended for abusive behavior after they beat a prisoner who went into cardiac arrest.

Four employees of the Giurgiu Penitentiary, aged between 27 and 42, have been detained by prosecutors and police following a case of abusive conduct. The incident occurred after an inmate, who had been beaten, was taken to the hospital, where he went into cardiac arrest and required resuscitation.

On Tuesday, the Prosecutor's Office will decide whether to propose their arrest or another preventive measure. The detentions took place following searches at 11 addresses in Giurgiu County, where evidentiary items were seized. The incident was filmed, and the inmate, convicted for driving under the influence of alcohol and theft, showed signs of violence at the hospital. The National Administration of Penitentiaries has sent a control team to investigate the disproportionate use of force by employees. ANP has identified indications of crimes following the analysis of the video material.
