The electric grid operator in Finland, Fingrid, announced that it will disconnect the fiber optic connection with Russia starting in 2027, according to information published by the newspaper 'Helsingin Sanomat'. This decision will take place once the lease contract of the telecommunications operator using the fiber optic cable expires at the end of this year. The cable connects Finland to Russia alongside the high-voltage power line, which has not been used since Russia halted electricity supply to Finland in 2022, citing payment issues.

Fingrid mentioned that, although this change will not significantly affect consumers, data connections between the two countries could experience delays. The disconnection will reduce the number of functional fiber optic cables between Russia and Europe, although connections through the Baltic states, Belarus, and submarine cables in the Baltic Sea will remain operational.
