The European Commission has approved the registration of Romania’s “Teaca Kneaded Cheese” as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), a decision that places the traditional product from the Teaca area among foods whose names benefit from protection across the European Union.
The cheese is made from raw, unpasteurized milk and has a soft, creamy and dense consistency. Its flavor is slightly salty, sweetish and mildly tangy. The product is made within the designated geographical area, and its characteristics are linked to the area’s natural conditions and traditional production methods. During preparation, the cheese is kneaded and may be placed in pig bladders, which are then sewn shut. These techniques have been passed down from generation to generation, contributing to the product’s identity.
European documentation requires all production stages to take place within the designated area. PGI protection guarantees the link between the product and its region of origin and prevents unauthorized use of the name. The “PGI” label becomes mandatory for this food and for agricultural products marketed under the protected name.
