Energy Minister Dumitru Chisăliță met on Monday, October 26, with representatives of KMG International, the company that controls Rompetrol Rafinare, to discuss continuing strategic cooperation on importing crude oil from Kazakhstan and processing it at refineries in Romania.
According to the Ministry of Energy, the discussions also covered the distribution of the resulting fuels both on the domestic market and in the markets of the region. The parties agreed to continue the dialogue, with the specific terms and conditions of the cooperation to be analyzed and established in the next stages.
Kazakhstan is Romania’s fifth-largest European trading partner, with trade exceeding 2.9 billion dollars in 2024, almost entirely represented by crude oil. In 2025, it accounted for more than 60% of Romania’s crude oil imports: 5.15 million out of a total of 8.3 million tons imported between January and November.
Rompetrol Rafinare operates the Petromidia and Vega refineries and is controlled by KMG International, the Dutch division of the Kazakh state oil company KazMunayGas. In the first half of 2026, Petromidia processed 2.6 million tons of raw material, while the company’s contribution to the budget exceeded 1.3 billion dollars.
