The European Green Party (EGP), the MEPs from the Greens/EFA group, and the SENS party have requested the Romanian Government and the Oradea City Hall to ensure the safe conduct of the Oradea Pride 2026 event, scheduled for July 25.
The organizers, the local LGBTQIA+ organization Ark Oradea, have been prevented from organizing a Pride march for the last four years. Local authorities intend to reject the proposed routes, offering only a gathering place. Vula Tsetsi, co-chair of the EGP, emphasized that human rights must be respected, and banning the march would violate European legislation. Kim van Sparrentak, MEP from the Greens/EFA group, urged local authorities to collaborate with the organizers.
The Vice President of the European Parliament, Nicu Ștefănuță, condemned the decision of the Oradea City Hall, stating that freedom of expression cannot be restricted. SENS announced that it will participate in the event, supporting the right to assemble. Over 125 organizations from Romania and abroad support this initiative, calling on the authorities to protect civic space. The signatories of the statement will monitor the situation and demand compliance with legal obligations.
