The plenary of the Chamber of Deputies has adopted a bill that amends Law no. 217/2003 regarding domestic violence, introducing additional measures for offenders. Courts will be able to require offenders to participate in psychological counseling, psychotherapy, or, in certain cases, to be hospitalized voluntarily or involuntarily. Additionally, local authorities will have to contact victims within 3 days of issuing the protection order and 14 days before its expiration, to inform them about the possibility of extension. Offenders will be required to report monthly to the police information about their participation in counseling sessions, and failure to comply with these measures will be sanctioned. The bill allows victims to request the protection order at the court of their residence or at the one in the jurisdiction of the offense, and the decision to issue the order must be communicated to local authorities within a maximum of 5 hours.
