The Romanian Banking Employers' Council rejects the proposal to tax excessive bank profits as harmful in the long term.

The CPBR expressed surprise at the introduction of the tax on excessive profit of banks in the government program, believing that it offers an illusion of short-term budgetary benefits, but will have negative effects in the long term. The government plans to raise 1.5 billion lei through the tax, estimated at 29%, but consultations with the NBR and the banking sector are needed to assess the real impact. The CPBR offers to work with the authorities on viable solutions.
