Cocoa powder prices rose by 16% in the US to near all-time highs amid reduced deliveries. Manufacturers such as Mars and Hershey have downsized products or added alternative ingredients. Raaka Chocolate says it is paying three times as much for cocoa powder, which is becoming increasingly hard to obtain. Substitutes for cocoa butter also don't offer the same flavor, complicating the situation. Cocoa processing has declined significantly in Europe and North America, with no signs of recovery in the short term.
