The Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests (MMAP) announced that the Nehoiașu II Hydroelectric Power Plant could be operational by 2029, after it issued the environmental agreement for the hydroenergy development of Surduc-Siriu, which is 78% completed.
This development will add 152 GWh/year to electricity production and will support the security of the national energy system's supply, in the context of the gradual phase-out of lignite and coal power plants. The project, declared of public utility, includes unfinished works that have suffered degradation. MMAP emphasized the importance of monitoring the environmental impact.
Although the investment is considered necessary, there are local controversies, and USR deputy Marius Alecsandru pointed out that hydropower is not the main solution for Romania, suggesting that investments in energy storage are more efficient. The project is taking place in the counties of Buzău, Covasna, and Vrancea, on the Buzău, Bâsca Mare, Bâsca Mică, and Zăbala rivers, having been initiated in 1981.
