The law regarding the payment of fines will be amended starting March 27, 2026, according to the announcement made by Europol. Until now, offenders could pay half of the minimum fine provided by law, regardless of the actual amount of the penalty applied.

This rule has led to situations where individuals with more serious offenses paid the same amount as those with less serious offenses. Emergency Ordinance no. 7/2026 changes this system, establishing that the reduction will be calculated at half of the fine actually applied by the police officer. For example, for a fine of 600 lei, the offender will pay 300 lei within 15 days. The purpose of this amendment is to better correlate penalties with the severity of the committed offenses.
