The Constitutional Court meets, in its sixth session, to discuss the bill that raises the retirement age and reduces judges' pensions, which has been stalled since December.

The judges of the Constitutional Court are meeting to analyze the draft law of the Bolojan Government, which proposes raising the retirement age of magistrates and reducing their pensions. The project has been blocked since December, and at the last meeting in February, the decision was postponed to evaluate a request from the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ) to refer to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).

The ICCJ argues that the amendments could violate the rights of magistrates and the principles of the European Union. If the CCR decides to refer to the CJEU, the process could take up to two years, during which the law cannot come into force. In the event that the CCR does not refer to the CJEU, it could issue a final decision on the project. The project stipulates that the pension of magistrates should be reduced to 70% of the last net salary and raises the retirement age to 65 by 2042. The ICCJ argues that the law would create discrimination between magistrates and other categories of beneficiaries of service pensions.
