Eight AUR senators have initiated a bill calling for the official name of the Balvanyos resort to be changed to “Bălvăniș,” which the initiators consider the Romanian form of the toponym. Although the Senate rejected the bill in December 2024, the initiative is still under parliamentary consideration in the Chamber of Deputies, the decision-making body.
The bill was sent to the standing committees for the preparation of reports, and the Government submitted its position in September 2025. The Executive left it to Parliament to decide whether adopting the initiative would be appropriate, so the name change depends on the continuation of the procedure and the deputies’ vote.
The initiative was signed by AUR senators Aelenei Evdochia, Busuioc Andrei, Cătană Gheorghe-Adrian, Cioromelea Valentin-Rică, Dăneasă Mircea, Dîrlău Andrei-Emil, Hangan Andrei and Neagu Ionuț. The proposal seeks to amend several pieces of legislation concerning protected areas and tourism development, including Law no. 5/2000, Law no. 526/2003 and Government Decision no. 852/2008.
USR deputy Allen Coliban publicly commented on the initiative, stating: “This is no joke: AUR has proposed a law to turn Balvanyos into Bălvăniș.” Parliament is expected to decide whether the current name will officially be replaced.
