The head of the Brașov Tribunal Prosecutor's Office, Adrian Radu, warned about a new method of fraud on WhatsApp, in which users receive messages apparently from courier companies, informing them about a package and asking them to access a link. This link leads to a fake page that imitates official websites, asking users to enter their phone number and the WhatsApp authentication code received via SMS. Once the user enters this code, the attacker can access the victim's WhatsApp account.
Once the account is compromised, the attackers can contact people in the victim's phone book, asking for money loans. The prosecutor recommends activating two-step verification on WhatsApp and avoiding accessing links from unexpected messages, emphasizing that courier companies never ask for WhatsApp codes. Users are advised to always check the sender and to manually access official websites.
