The authorities in Romania will hand over Alexandru Bălan, accused of attempted treason, during the day on Friday, according to judicial sources. Bălan, 47 years old, with dual Romanian and Moldovan citizenship, will be escorted by the Romanian Police from the Central Detention Center to the Albița Customs.
He is accused of transmitting state secret information to KGB officers from Belarus, in meetings held in Budapest, between 2024 and 2025. The investigation, conducted under the auspices of EUROJUST, has benefited from the support of intelligence services from Romania, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, as well as prosecutors from these countries.
Bălan, a former officer of the Information and Security Service of the Republic of Moldova, is suspected of endangering the national security of Romania by disclosing classified information.
