According to the National Institute of Statistics (INS), Romania's population could decrease by 3.4 million people by 2080, which represents a reduction of 17.9% compared to 2025. The projections were made in three scenarios, all indicating a decrease in population, but with significant variations. The constant scenario predicts a decrease from 19.036 million in 2025 to 14.367 million in 2080, while the optimistic variant estimates a reduction of only 1.923 million.

The number of active people will decrease from 8.304 million in 2024 to between 6.027 million and 6.535 million in 2080, and the employed population will decrease from 7.853 million to values between 5.722 million and 6.196 million. The South-West Oltenia and South-East regions will record the largest decreases, of over 40%. Additionally, the economic dependency ratio will increase, highlighting the need for active policies to stimulate participation in the labor market.

The demographic projections underline the challenges that Romania will face in the future, including the need to adapt resources to the needs of society. Demographic changes, such as migration and developments in birth and death rates, complicate the anticipation of the country's future demographic outlook.
