Recently, images generated by artificial intelligence, including one of a blind man in the Nazi camp at Flossenbürg, have sparked controversy on social media. These historical forgeries, which undermine the credibility of historical reality, are becoming increasingly common, according to AFP's Factcheck team. Holocaust experts warn that these images can promote revisionism and distort historical facts. Examples include a photograph of a girl, purportedly a victim of Auschwitz, and a Czech violinist, both of which are fabricated. The motivations for these forgeries are commercial, generating revenue from clicks, and political, aiming to spread revisionist narratives. Memorial institutions are calling on social media to collaborate to combat this false content, but responses vary, and the images continue to circulate. This situation reflects a concerning trend of denial and relativization of the Holocaust, in the context of a rise in extremism and antisemitism.
