Visa tested 22 AI agents by asking them to purchase televisions, laptops, and hair appliances. On average, they successfully completed 57% of purchases, based on 15 sessions for each agent.

Google’s Gemini agents and Meta’s Making achieved the best results, with an 82% success rate. A Claude agent ranked third, with 76%, while an OpenAI agent ranked sixth, with 64%. The most expensive models averaged 67%, compared with 50% for the cheapest ones.

In some cases, the agents chose the wrong products or failed to recommend suitable options, especially when the buyer’s requirements were incomplete and required additional questions. Visa considers agent-made purchases to still be at an early stage. Unresolved issues include liability for unauthorized purchases and fraud.
