As of Tuesday, cruise ship passengers visiting the islands of Santorini and Mykonos will be subject to a 20 euro tax, according to Greece's finance ministry. The measure, adopted last year, is aimed at controlling the large number of tourists who are damaging the islands' infrastructure. The tax will be €5 for other Greek islands. In 2024, Greece saw a surge in tourists to 40.7 million and the cruise industry continues to grow rapidly, but destinations such as Santorini risk reaching saturation point.
