A drawing by Michelangelo was sold at Christie’s for 27.2 million dollars, setting a new auction record for the artist. The work, created with red chalk between 1511 and 1512, represents a study of the right leg of the Libyan Sibyl from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and is considered the only unrecorded sketch to ever come to market. Initially estimated at 1.5–2 million dollars, the drawing attracted major interest from collectors, being one of the few works by Michelangelo in private hands. The lot was part of an auction dedicated to old masters, in the context in which Christie’s reported total sales of 6.2 billion dollars in 2025.
