At the closing gala of the 23rd edition of TIFF, the movie "Stranger Earth" won the Transylvania Trophy for a drama about Palestinian refugees. Director Mahdi Fleifel highlighted the difficulties of making the film and called for peace. Other awards went to "Xoftex" for directing and "Debut" for the Special Jury Prize. Actress Ghjuvanna Benedetti was also awarded for acting and "The New Year That Wasn't" won the Feature Film Award. The Gala ended with a moving message from Béla Tarr, highlighting the importance of storytelling in film.
