Sony Pictures has announced the development of a film based on the Labubu toys, after acquiring the rights for adaptation. Directed by Paul King, known for the global success of the Paddington films and the musical Wonka, the film is in the early stages of development. Labubus, toys inspired by Nordic stories, have gained popularity in Southeast Asia since 2019, being promoted by the Chinese retailer Pop Mart. Their popularity has increased due to social media posts and adoption by celebrities. The Labubu film joins a series of productions inspired by toys, continuing the trend started by the success of the Barbie film in 2023. Additionally, Sony and Mattel have announced a collaboration for a film based on the View-Master toy.
