The new Resident Evil film had the most profitable debut in the history of the franchise

Resident Evil, directed by Zach Cregger, had the most profitable opening weekend in the history of the horror franchise, grossing $60 million in North America. The production surpassed initial estimates of $40 million to $50 million and generated an additional $48.3 million in international markets, bringing its global total to $108.3 million.

The performance surpassed the record set by Resident Evil: Afterlife, which earned $26 million at its 2010 opening, unadjusted for inflation. The new film is the second recent remake produced by Sony and the eighth title in the series. The result was supported by favorable reviews, the franchise’s popularity, and the director’s reputation.

Zach Cregger made a name for himself with Barbarian, released in 2022, and Weapons, which grossed $270 million worldwide against a $38 million budget and earned actress Amy Madigan an Oscar.

In the weekend chart, Practical Magic 2 took second place with $12 million, followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day with $6.5 million. The Odyssey and Coyote vs. Acme rounded out the top five.
