Wolfsburg has been relegated to the Zweite Bundesliga after 29 years of continuous presence in the top league, following the playoff against Paderborn. After a 0-0 result in the first leg, Wolfsburg opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, thanks to Dzenan Pejcinovic, but was left with a numerical disadvantage from the 14th minute when Joakin Maehle was sent off. Paderborn equalized through Filip Bilbija in the 38th minute, and Laurin Curda scored the winning goal in injury time (100th minute). Wolfsburg, owned by Volkswagen, has a successful history in the Bundesliga, having won the title in 2009 and finishing second in 2015. Paderborn, on the other hand, will play its third season in the Bundesliga, having previous experiences of relegation. This is Paderborn's fourth promotion from the second division since the reintroduction of playoffs in 2009.
