Sorana Cîrstea had a bye in the opening round, and in the second round, she was defeated by Australian player Maya Joint, ranked 48th in the world, with a score of 6-4, 6-4.

The match started promisingly for Sorana Cîrstea, who led 3-1 after an excellent start, without losing a point on her own serve. However, the Australian made a strong comeback and won five of the next six games, turning the tide of the first set.

In the second set, the Australian managed two quick breaks. Cîrstea got back into the game after saving four game points and made a rebreak to level it at 3-3, but she could not extend the match into a deciding set. Maya Joint kept her composure at the end of the match and won the last three games.

For her presence in the second round in Toronto, Sorana Cîrstea will receive $28,425 and 35 WTA points.
