North Korea has not managed to secure qualifying spots for the Winter Olympics in Italy.

The last participation of North Koreans in the Winter Olympics took place in 2018, in the South Korean city of PyeongChang, when they sent 22 athletes in five sports disciplines.

Sports clubs of state bodies and major industrial centers compete in over 50 events across five winter sports.

The 2026 National Winter Games began on Wednesday in the sports village in the Paektusan area of Samjiyon, a city located in the mountains near the border with China, the official news agency announced.
