The Newcastle club publicly condemned the "unacceptable treatment" that its supporters suffered from the police at Stade Vélodrome, after the Champions League match against Olympique Marseille, which ended 1-2. In a statement, the club explained that supporters were forced to remain in the stadium to ensure their safety upon exit, being escorted by the police.
Although fans waited calmly and without incidents, the police intervention was deemed excessive, involving the use of tear gas and physical force. The club intends to request an investigation from UEFA and local authorities. One supporter stated that he was treated "like an animal" by the police in Marseille.
