Dimitri Payet, former attacking midfielder of Olympique Marseille and the French national team, announced his retirement from professional football during the Ligue 1 + show, at halftime of the match between OM and Lille. A day before turning 39, Payet emotionally stated that he does not want to be involved in a project where he cannot be 100% dedicated.
The player had an impressive career, playing 38 matches for Les Bleus and reaching the Euro 2016 final. At Olympique Marseille, Payet played 326 matches, scoring 78 goals and providing 95 assists. Despite having a successful career, Payet did not win titles with OM or with Vasco de Gama, his last club. His retirement comes amid controversies related to a complaint of physical and psychological violence filed against him in Brazil.
