Austria and Algeria finished in a draw, 3-3, in the last round of the group stage of the World Cup. The result secured both teams' qualification for the knockout stage, while Iran exited the competition.
Captain Riyad Mahrez scored for Algeria with a minute left in extra time, bringing the team close to victory. However, Sasa Kalajdzic quickly scored the equalizer for Austria, followed by goals from Marko Arnautovic and Marcel Sabitzer.
With this result, Austria finished second in Group J, behind Argentina, and qualified for the first time since 1982. The team will face European champions Spain on Thursday in Los Angeles. Algeria, on the other hand, finished third in the group and will play against Switzerland, having become the ninth African team to qualify.
