Authorities in the Republic of Moldova are investigating a criminal group suspected of preparing violent actions and mass disorder by mobilizing young people on social media. The investigation was announced Saturday by the General Inspectorate of Police, following searches carried out Friday in Chișinău and in the central and northern parts of the country.
Officers from the National Investigations Inspectorate and the Intelligence and Security Service, together with PCCOCS prosecutors and special forces, targeted individuals suspected of issuing calls for violence and inciting mass disorder.
According to preliminary data, the suspects allegedly sought to obtain financial benefits and organize violent actions, including the destruction of or damage to public and private property. To this end, they allegedly created fake profiles on TikTok and Facebook and Telegram channels, including one called “ProtestMD.” Some accounts were allegedly managed from abroad and used to attract young people, particularly from vocational and higher education institutions.
Police say the group’s members allegedly used manipulation techniques to lessen awareness of the consequences of their actions. The suspects are cooperating with investigators, while inquiries continue to identify everyone involved. Authorities recommend that citizens verify information online and not respond to calls for violence.
