Former President Traian Băsescu discussed France's initiative to extend the nuclear umbrella to protect European states, analyzing Romania's options in this context. In an intervention on B1 TV, Băsescu emphasized that Emmanuel Macron's offer could decouple Europe from the USA regarding security, considering the unpredictable nature of American President Donald Trump. He mentioned that, although Romania would benefit from nuclear protection as a NATO member, there are concerns regarding Trump's commitments. Băsescu highlighted that France's nuclear arsenal is not sufficient to face threats and that the nuclear warheads are not integrated into the NATO system, leaving the decision in the hands of the French president. He also pointed out that Poland wishes to participate in this agreement, but France needs to increase its nuclear capacity to fulfill its responsibilities.
