President Nicușor Dan has warned about the rise of populism in Romania at an event dedicated to the centenary of the National Peasant Party, calling for the defense of democratic values. The head of state stressed that democracy should not be considered a definitive achievement, as polls indicate that not all Romanians see their future in a democratic society.
Nicușor Dan highlighted the PNȚ’s role in shaping national and democratic awareness, as well as in promoting morality, responsibility, loyalty to the Romanian state and dignity in political life. He recalled that these values were preserved even during communist repression, when thousands of party members were arrested, deported and persecuted.
The president said that the principles promoted by the PNȚ influenced Romania’s reconstruction after the fall of communism and its Euro-Atlantic orientation. In his view, responsibility is the opposite of populism, and society must promote solutions based on reality, not on “fantasies.”
The head of state also drew attention to pessimism and distrust in society, saying that current generations have a responsibility to defend the values for which the party’s members fought and sacrificed themselves.
