The leader of PNL, Bolojan, reflected on the over 30 years in the party, highlighting both successes and failures. He emphasized that modernizing a community requires good governance and a liberal imprint, demonstrated by his experience in Oradea. Bolojan recalled two key moments: the alliance with PSD in 2021, which was decided in a controversial manner, and the recent vote to break collaboration with PSD.
He emphasized that the decision to enter opposition has regained the party's dignity, essential for regaining the trust of Romanians. Bolojan promised that he would work alongside colleagues to transform PNL into a trustworthy party, dedicated to modernizing Romania, highlighting political responsibility and commitment to the country.
"FOR LIBERALS
I have been in PNL for over 30 years.
I have gone through good and bad times. I have enjoyed the victories achieved and the successes of our mayors. I have been saddened by failures and wrong decisions.
I have met people of character. Through the friendships formed, PNL has been a second family to me.
In over 20 years in administration, I have gained the conviction that you cannot modernize a community or a country without good governance and a liberal imprint. I have proven this in Oradea and in many places across the country. I have also tried in Bucharest.
In recent years, I have witnessed many of PNL's complicated decisions. Two of them, in which I participated, were significant.
The first: 2021, the PNL leadership meeting at Vila Lac. There are several absentees.
The then president of PNL, Florin Cîțu, after being "elected" on an anti-PSD speech, submits to a vote the formation of the alliance with PSD.
Who is in favor?
Few raise their hands, embarrassed. The votes are not counted.
Who is against?
Few raise their hands. These votes are counted.
Although the majority do not raise their hands to any question, Cîțu concludes that the difference between those present and those who voted against means a vote for the alliance with PSD.
Decisions were made in other offices, the PNL leadership office only formalized them.
The waters were mixed and troubled. What followed and where these decisions led us, at the end of 2024, is known. The bullet passed us by...
The second: 2026, the extended meeting of the PNL leadership, the day before yesterday.
After warning PSD that it is leading the country into a crisis and that we will no longer collaborate with them if they do this, in my capacity as president of PNL, I submit to a vote to no longer form a coalition with them and to enter opposition.
After a debate with replies and arguments, who is in favor?
50 colleagues raise their hands. I saw in the eyes of many the regained dignity.
Who is against?
No hands raised. 4 did not vote.
We separated the waters. They cleared up.
The decision was made in the PNL leadership office, not in other offices.
PNL has regained with this decision what no position and no poll can buy: self-respect.
It is the first condition to regain the trust of Romanians.
I know that a light period will not follow and that there are no results without effort, without a team, and without overcoming difficulties.
But I am convinced that PNL has chosen the right path.
I will work, together with all my colleagues, for PNL to become a party in which more Romanians place their hope and which can truly contribute to the modernization of Romania.
A party that can make mistakes, but that never abandons its country. A party that does not run away from responsibility. A party that understands that politics does not only mean power, but the obligation to help Romania stand on its feet in the long term.
With seriousness. With decency. With faith. With respect for work, for freedom, and for the dignity of people.
And the National Liberal Party will remain where it has always been in the difficult moments of history: on the side of Romania.
So help us God!" wrote Ilie Bolojan on Facebook.
