Former President Traian Băsescu commented on the resizing of US troops in Romania, stating that this does not represent a signal of lack of interest from the Americans. He explained that, following the NATO summit in 2014, it was decided to reposition combat equipment on the Eastern flank, which does not require a constant presence of soldiers. Băsescu mentioned that Romania has only one permanent base, in Deveselu, while the others are training or logistical bases. Băsescu emphasized that American soldiers come to Romania on a rotational basis, without being permanently deployed. He reminded that Romania has been a reliable partner in international missions, such as those in Afghanistan and Iraq. Regarding America's predictability, Băsescu expressed concerns about American support for Ukraine and emphasized that Europe must rely on its own capabilities.
