16 suspects from Romania are accused of using UK taxpayers' personal details to claim fraudulent tax refunds from HMRC. The illegally obtained sums were transferred to accounts controlled by the group and withdrawn to disguise their origin. The Romanian authorities carried out searches to gather evidence and the total damage exceeds £1 million. The group used hacking to alter taxpayers' information and create fake accounts, claiming refunds on the basis of false tax returns.
