Romania pledged in 2020 to close 3,700 MW of coal-fired capacity by December 31, 2025, but Economy Minister Bogdan Ivan stressed that this deadline is impossible to meet. Coal-fired power plants are essential for the balance of the energy system, and the authorities are negotiating with the European Union for an extension of the deadline. Ivan noted that tenders are being prepared for gas-fired power plants to replace coal-fired plants, but they will remain in conservation for unforeseen situations.
