
Donald Tusk stated that Poland is in consultations with NATO allies to strengthen air defense, after 19 drones entered Polish airspace, with four of them being shot down. This is the first intervention of NATO aircraft against threats in allied airspace. Tusk emphasized the need for concrete support from allies, mentioning that Poland is not at war, but is in a situation of major conflict. Russia has rejected the accusations, demanding evidence for the origin of the downed drones.
Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO Treaty) states that member states will consult each other whenever one of them considers that its territorial integrity, political independence, or security is threatened. This is a political consultation mechanism that precedes a possible invocation of Article 5, which stipulates collective defense in the event of an armed attack.
