The mayor of Vințu de Jos, Petru Ioan Barbu, was found hanged in an annex of his home.

He was a member of the PNL and was in his first term as mayor. In February 2021, the mayor was arrested on charges of embezzlement, intellectual forgery and forgery. He was remanded in custody for 60 days.
